Librarian’s chair

The William Salt Library is the huge collection of printed books, pamphlets, manuscripts, drawings, watercolours, and transcripts built up by William Salt (1808-1863). William was a London banker with a deep interest in the history and topography of Staffordshire. After his death the collection was gifted to the County. The Library continues to collect and preserve printed books, printed ephemera, pamphlets and illustrative material relating to Staffordshire. It moved to its present location in Eastgate Street, Stafford, in 1918. The Librarian was responsible for the collection and the chair remains as a memento of this role.
