Deed of gift
On the 19th December 1890 a deed of gift “of a piece of land in the Parish of Trentham” was made by the Duke of Sutherland to the trustees of Longton Cottage Hospital. This made it possible for a new Cottage Hospital to be built on Upper Belgrave Road, replacing the earlier, smaller building(s) situated at what was then called Mount Pleasant but is now known as Lawley Street. This deed, which is held at Stoke-on-Trent City Archives defines the terms of the gift and contains the signatures of the parties involved along with a plan of the site (which you can see peeking through the parchment in the photograph!).
